Travis Perkins is one of the largest Builders’ Merchants in the UK. Its product range covers many hundreds of thousands of lines and it has a very high number of suppliers. A small number of suppliers deliver centrally via the Company’s DC in Northampton but most deliver direct to the branches.
The Company was considering a number of options for improving its management of the supply chain and wanted to look more closely at the options for use of a nominated carrier for collection from suppliers, consolidation and then delivery to stores.
THE LOGISTICS BUSINESS was asked to review this option and make an assessment of its feasibility based on the potential for cost and service improvement. The work included an analysis of those products and suppliers which would be most suited to nominated carriers and a review of the carriers that would be capable of handling the business for Travis Perkins. A detailed costing exercise was undertaken and the pros and cons of various options were considered.
The report prepared by THE LOGISTICS BUSINESS provided a sound basis for Travis Perkins to compare the nominated carrier option with other options such as expansion of the central distribution facility and hence to make decisions on the overall development of its distribution network.
