The Road to Recovery…..
2009 has been a bad year for many businesses, whatever the sector, and many have had to cut their workforce in order to survive. The recession has hit jobs at all levels and there have been many casualties at middle and senior management level. Companies have been forced to lose skills that will be difficult to replace in the short to medium term and even if the skills were available, Boards will be reluctant to see management head count increase during the next few years of slow recovery. And there is no activity where this is more acute than in logistics and distribution, and area that many Boards see the costs (incorrectly in our view) as a necessary evil.
Recovery will put pressures on those companies that have held back investment in recent years and many distribution projects will now come back to the top of the list. The shortage of skills to make these projects happen could result in projects being delayed or even worse, failing. Hence, many companies will turn to specialist consultancies to fill the gap in skills and we will undoubtedly see a growth in supply chain and logistics consultancy in 2010. Some of this will be covered by senior logistics professionals returning to the sector on short term contracts but the bulk of the activity will be provided by companies like THE LOGISTICS BUSINESS who have maintained momentum through the recession and who have the depth of skills and experience to support these demanding new projects.
