Site Security - New opportunities for smaller sites

Security on construction sites is an ever increasing worry.  As the credit crunch bites there is evidence of petty crime rising and employers are having to be ever more vigilant about protecting employees.

Along side this this proliferation of regulation, much relating to health and safety, makes it increasingly important to ensure that employees and contractors are fully aware of their responsibilities and trained in the tasks they are being asked to perform.

On large sites these problems can be solved by throwing money at a range of technologies from turnstiles to face recognition but what about the small to medium sized construction sites where limited budgets preclude such solutions?

It is to address both of these issues that THE LOGISTICS BUSINESS is now offering a development of its Zone Manager Construction Site Logistics software.

Zone Manager was originally developed as a booking system to control materials deliveries to sites.  On arrival, deliveries are booked in and on departure the vehicle is booked out.  Information about the Suppliers is also held to aid booking, measuring performance, etc. as well as helping to smooth the flow of materials, Zone Manager also ensures that only those deliveries that have been pre-booked are allowed access helping to maintain site security.

So it is only a small development of this that turns it into a system for recoding the arrival of employees and contractors on site.  Using a simple swipe card interface to the system, workers can clock themselves in and out.  Because the system has been designed to cope with the limited infrastructure common on construction sites, computers at the various entry points can be linked to the sever via the Internet.  Information about each worker can be held from whether they have had a site induction to what Personal Protective Equipment they have been issued with and what certificates they hold to operate various types of machinery as is required under the CDM legislation.  In fact any information about workers (subject to satisfying data protection requirements) can be recorded.

When a new person arrives that does not have a security pass Zone Manager can print a temporary one.  Zone Manager can even be configured to print permits to work or any other documentation that might be needed.

With a product like Zone Manager even small construction sites can enjoy the type of security and other controls previously only affordable on bigger sites.  And of course once this system is installed the delivery management features can be made available at a modest additional  cost.
