When Panasonic opened their Northampton DC in 1997 to supply the UK and Ireland the product range and profiles of the individual products was significantly different to what it is now. Just look at how televisions have grown in size with wide-screens, but look set to reduce again as flat screens gain ground. As a consequence of these changes the measures in place to monitor warehouse efficiency had become less appropriate.
Working with THE LOGISTICS BUSINESS, process maps and a material flow diagram were produced, highlighting what should measured. Detailed analysis identified the key drivers and with data on resources and their costs, a schedule of KPIs was agreed. These allow Panasonic to monitor performance down to individual level, to plan more accurately, setting targets at team level and to assess the impact of business changes on the DC activity.
