Footprints We Leave Behind
In the future, more of us will care about the footprints we leave behind. Carbon footprint was a hot topic discussion by some tables at the 15 Years of Logistics Summit, and not without good reason. Global warming is high on the political agenda at present, with governments and businesses more sensitive to increased public awareness. Companies are measuring carbon footprint and politicians gearing up to tax it.
Yet measurement will be a real problem. Where do you draw the line; at your operational sites, transport, suppliers, deliveries, employees? If a carbon tax is introduced companies will strive to minimise their bill. Carbon offset and trading are being discussed but this just shifts the problem. And like all waste disposal it is best dealt with close to the point of origin.
Companies with global reach move assets and capacity to parts of the world that suit them best. It is likely that through taxation and carbon reduction legislation, government will in the future play a much stronger role.
